Windows Server 2008 : Junk in the Trunk or Power under the Hood

What all the fuss about Microsofts Windows 2008 Server Operating System?

Microsoft is the company the most people love to hate. A company that touches the lives of almost everybody and their uncle and not forgetting sentor McCains buddy “Joe the Plumber” Hi Joe. But seriously, I was one of them as an IT professional / IT Consultant. My opinion has changed and so are the opinions of others changing. Microsoft was not just famous for helping stick a computer in ever home, but also extremely famous for releasing what i term half baked software. That was then, and this is now.

Microsofts new Windows 2008 Family of Servers have changed alot of opinions in the marketplace, certainly for those that install, maintain and manage Microsoft Server Products. In my last post I wrote about “Windows Server 2008 : Best Time to Migrate” . In this post we look at the main features that make Microsoft Woindows 2008 different from all its predesessors.

When we scrath the surface, theres really not many signs of any dramatic improvements over Windows Server 2003. In fact Windows 2008 Server closeley resembles an OS that has a Microsoft Vista appearance with Windows Server 2003 features and tools. But before we jump to any conclusion, let lift the hood on this new bad boy from Microsoft.

Windows Server 2008 is not your run of the mill grandma desktop operating system. It is a commercial grade operating system designed for business. So it’s not surprising to see that some of the features are stripped out by default. Festures such as Windows Aero 3D and Multimedia Applications, which are typically found on Microsoft Vista.

Lets review some of the major features that you typically wont see, but are core to the operating systems capabilities:

  1. Self Healing NTFS
  2. Zero Downtime via Hot Swappable Hardware
  3. Server Message Blocks 2.0
  4. Parallel Session Creation
  5. User Profile Hive Cleanup
  6. Hyper-V

Sit tight and don’t go anywhere the next few posts over the next week or so will delve deeper into each of the above features.
